Hell Reviews - Supernatural: Witch's Canyon

Synopsis: This is a Supernatural novel that reveals a previously unseen adventure for the Winchester brothers, from the hit "CW" series!Twenty-two years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a demonic supernatural force, and they have grown up learning how to hunt and kill the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...Now they are on a road trip around the Grand Canyon - to a stretch of deserted ranchland where mysterious murder sprees occur every forty years. But a new mega-mall is about to open and the brothers must face a horde of vindictive ghosts and animal spirits.Join Sam and Dean on an all-new monster hunt, in this original Supernatural novel.

The second book in the series, while not as memorable as Nevermore, was still a lot of fun to read.
This time the story is told by Jeff Mariotte and he does just as good a job at keeping the brothers in character as Keith does.
I seriously believe these guys should be writers on the show, they’d keep them more in character than some of the show writers themselves at the moment.

The story was one that kept me wanting to read, an issue I’ve had with a few of the later books is that they seemed to drag on and had some moments that were completely nonsensical, as you will discover when I review One Year Gone.
If you’re looking for examples of plot convenience then that book seems to be the one to go to, but I’ll get to that one in a few weeks.

The first three books however flew by and I found myself fairly disappointed when they ended, a feeling I’ve only had with a few of these later ones.
I’m not sure why they count the first three as a separate series, maybe it’s supposed to be pre-angels and then post-angels, I’ve never really looked it up but that’s my assumption.

Due to my lack of memory and re-reads, it seems unfair of me to try and make a comment on the content that I simply can’t remember, that’s not to say it isn’t a good book as it is, and I do vaguely remember Sam getting some good action moments but it was ultimately forgettable.
Usually I’d chalk this down to it being almost ten years since I’ve read it, but I have books I remember reading long before this one where I can remember specific details.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s a fun ride whilst it lasts, but it’s not the best ride in the theme park, which is a shame as I know Jeff did a wonderful job with it and I never had moments where I was laughing because something was so out of character or shifted drastically away from the canon TV series.

From what I can recall there’s a nice, cohesive story behind what’s going on and everything is a nice build up to the final act of Sam and Dean saving the day. It’s just bit of a slow burner, but once it gets going boy does it get going.

I do wish they made a better cover for it, I personally cringe seeing this one. Now Jared and Jensen are handsome men, there’s no doubt about that, but this isn’t the most flattering photo shoot they could have used for the cover.
It’s my least favourite from this specific series, the original three.

In the end, it’s a good book and it’s worth a read if you’re a fan, just don’t expect to get too much from it.
Though it is adorable to see Dean get oddly excited over the Grand Canyon.

Hell Reviews - Doll Graveyard.

Synopsis: Low-budget horror. In 1905, 12-year-old Sophia (Hannah Marks) plays all by herself in her big, creepy house with four handmade dolls as friends. When her abusive father (Ken Lyle) has finally had enough, he forces her to bury them in the backyard. But, after she slips and accidentally breaks her neck, her dad buries her right along with the dolls. 100 years later, the Fillbrook family moves into the very same house. Guy Fillbrook (Jared Kusnitz) finds the buried dolls while playing in the backyard. After the 100 year old, decaying dolls are unearthed, Sophia's spirit begins to possess Guy and the dolls are brought back to life. When Guy's bullying sister has a party with her friends and turns on him, the dolls stand up for Guy once and for all, violently showing the nasty teenagers who's boss.

Oh man, Doll Graveyard.
What can I say about Doll Graveyard?
Let me tell you...nothing positive.

This was part of the pile that my older brother bought me for Christmas and up until that point his track record was already pretty damn poor.
I completely understand that it's low budget, I really do, but that doesn't give it an excuse to be so bloody dull.
I'm not even sure if this falls into the category of so bad it's good, was it meant to be a horror comedy all along?
Or was that an accident on the producer and writer's part?
Because if it was either they A: Managed to make it just bad and B: Failed to make it funny.

The acting was just atrocious, the girl at the start seemed promising until she had to 'die', by...slipping on the dirt as she got out the grave her father forced her to bury her dolls in? Being pushed by the father? I can't tell, all I saw was a girl fall in a super controlled way, as you do when you slip.
The modern actors were worse than the 'ye olde day' actors, my left toe has more acting ability than any of the people named above.

The story was pretty much incoherent half the time, easy to follow but still 'what the fuck?' worthy at every turn.
These guys take 'dumb teens' to a new level of awkwardness.
The sister was a bitch, the friends and boyfriends were assholes for the sake of being typical jocks, there was the quirky girl who had to be untainted just because, you know...the type who wouldn't hang out with that group of friends in the first place?
The brother was a typical nerd who they tried to develop a love story with involving the quiet, shy, non-drinking virgin girl.
Which all gets fluidly forgotten when the Puppet Master rejects come into play.
The acting doesn't get better though.

It's really boring, avoid.

Though I love this little bitch of a doll.

Dismembear of the Week - Week Six

This weeks Dismembear is sadly the last one in my 'catalogue'.
He is one of my personal favourites that I made for my best friend, I love how he came out and couldn't have been happier.
I'm currently making another that I am still thinking of selling online if there is an audience for them.

Hell Reviews - Supernatural: Nevermore

Synopsis: This is a Supernatural novel that reveals a previously unseen adventure for the Winchester brothers, from the hit "CW" series! Twenty-two years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. Since then, they have grown up learning how to hunt and kill the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...When the brothers hit New York to check out a haunted house, they soon make a more grisly and suspicious discovery. A spate of killings, apparently based on the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, are occurring near the author's old house. Join Sam and Dean on an all-new monster hunt, in this original Supernatural novel.

To celebrate the beginning of Supernatural season 11 starting here in the UK this Wednesday, I have decided that I will spend the next few weeks reviewing the various Supernatural novels that have been released.

Aside from Cold Fire, as it’s only just been released and I haven’t had a chance to read it, and naturally I can’t review Mythmaker as it comes out next month and ‘Pending title’ September’s book.

For this I will mostly be focusing on the actual novels, not the various others like John Winchester’s Journal or the Bobby focused one.
The first in the series of books is Nevermore, and what an introduction it was.

Despite having two other titles with that particular cover style and ten, soon to be twelve by September, in the new cover style, Nevermore has been one that stuck with me years after the first read and it originally came out on 2007!
Man…I can’t believe it’s been that long already.

Now let’s get this out there straight off the bat, as I’ve noticed that I seem to comment on these a lot, but I like the cover.

It’s simplistic, I like the colours and I like Sam’s shirt.

Story wise I think it’s great, the whole book did have the whole feel that the show contained around the time that it was released. Brotherly banter, to the point hunting and general ghostlyness.

I really enjoyed the case and the integration of each haunting spot that went along with the Poe focus, I especially enjoyed Robert the doll’s little cameo.

Sam and Dean were written extremely well, and after originally being stuck with fan fiction for a while before that book came out it was a pleasant change. Not to say all fan fiction is terrible, heck I write Supernatural fan fiction myself, but sometimes it’s hard to hit the nail on the head when writing certain character tropes.

Keith R.A DeCandido has quickly become one of my favourite authors of these books, he’s so good at picking up different characters and keeping them true to their original introduction and I always found his own tiny spins on them interesting as well.

The same was with the books in the various Buffy the Vampire Slayer book series, he seems to have this penchant for keeping characters in character and not grabbing them and just going wild.

I think this is a strong start to the series, nothing stood out to me that was inherently negative. This is one book that I would happily pick up and read over and over again, the hunting was enjoyable and reading the Winchester’s brotherly banter brought a smile to my face.

For the first novel for this books I would give it top marks.

Belated Movie Monday Review - Hell Reviews Fingerprints.

Synopsis: In this terrifying supernatural thriller, a troubled teenager sets out on a grisly path to discover the disturbing truth behind a well-known urban legend. Haunted for fifty years by the horrifying tale of a train colliding with a school bus, killing all the children aboard, the small town left behind continues to suffer as a stomach-churning chain of murders claims victim after victim. Brought to life by a stand-out cast including Kristin Cavallari (Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County), Leah Pipes (Malcolm In The Middle), Josh Henderson (Desperate Housewives) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Courage Under Fire), Fingerprints will leave its mark on your nightmares!

The old legend of the children pushing the car across the tracks is one of my favourites out there, it’s so sad yet so endearing at the same time.

In retrospect it could have been such a good film idea in the hands of competent writers, but unfortunately we weren’t gifted with talented screen writers.

What a terrible film this was.

Not only was it a cliché mess of a film, but the story just had nothing to it that was worth watching.

The characters were bland and offered nothing, aside from the mother of the main character being a totally unlikeable bitch.

We have a main character who is interchangeable with any other person in the film and the impact would be the same, the actress is just barely watchable at times and is a complete non-entity.

It’s such a bad film that there’s just nothing to say about it except don’t watch it, it’s up there on my list of worst films along with Krampus: The Christmas Devil.

Avoid it.

Hell's featured on Midnight Cassette season 2

I was a bit too giddy and getting used to 'new' yesterday to post this, but the new series of DimensionBucket's Midnight Cassette came out yesterday and I am beyond excited with this.
This is the first time I've had a story read online, to my knowledge anyway, and my best friend in having her story read in another episode.

The first episode came out yesterday and features my stories, the first and third, and the stories of two other writers. I think the final product is great and definitely worth a listen, the narrators do an amazing job with their given stories, I don't wish to give away who read mine ones but I admit, I may have fangirled a tiny 'little' bit...

If you're into a good creepy listen then I'd recommend checking it out!

Dismembear of the Week - Week Five

This was the last, and largest, Dismembear that I've completed. However I do currently still have one in progress.
I currently still have possession of that certain Dismembear, but I have been contemplating selling it on eBay.
My favourite part on this one is the cheek switch, it's not very clear on the picture but it's a part I'm particularly proud of.

Hell Reviews: The Devil's Detective by Simon Kurt Unsworth

Synopsis: Welcome to hell....... where skinless demons patrol the lakes and the waves of Limbo wash against the outer walls, while the souls of the Damned float on their surface, waiting to be collected.
When an unidentified, brutalised body is discovered, the case is assigned to Thomas Fool, one of Hell's detectives, known as 'Information Men’. But how do you investigate a murder where death is commonplace and everyone is guilty of something?

This is a book my mum recommended to me on Goodreads at totally random, purely on the basis of me liking horror and I am so glad she did.

On a normal basis I don't do crime, but mixing mysteries and demons? That's right up my alley.
Saying this book doesn't hold back is an understatement, there's gruesome demons, tons of blood, lots of fire, shining angels and a nice array of characters.

One thing I tend to dislike about crime books is the detective work and initially I was worried that this book would be like a basic crime book just based in Hell, but despite the focus being on one of three Information Men in the book I didn't find the investigation segments dragged at all.
The added horror elements really made the background information more interesting than if it had been a basic human detective, the fact the entire story is based in Hell gave the author a whole world to explore and delve into and Simon wastes no time in creating his own awful place.
He created various races of demon, the differences of classes and treatments that parallel the modern rich against poor society we live in today with a devilish twist and that made it all the more interesting.

Our lead character, Thomas Fool, begins as a seeming novice at his job and slowly builds as a character as the book progresses and the characters he interacts with all affect him in some way. It was nice to see a character who doubted himself, perhaps a little too much at times which could get tiring at points, but compared to the amount of self assured, strongly independent and always right detectives you get in other books it was a pleasant change.

I like the look into the relationship between angels and demons and those souls belonging in Limbo.
Michael and Balthazar were strong characters in themselves and I enjoyed the short but many segments that they showed up.

The crimes themselves were interesting and I like how the killer used various methods to destroy his victims, although I did find myself figuring out what was going on before I'd reached halfway in the books, but I wasn't completely correct in my guesses and the need to find out what was going on amongst the demons and tainted souls pushed me forward towards the end.

I had very few complaints honestly, aside from Fool's constant doubt and moping about being rather useless I never found myself groaning, sighing or rolling my eyes at anything

It's a book I would definitely recommend for those who can hold their stomach on some sicker details and I for one am looking forward to buying the sequel.

Tek Tek by Hell.R.

She was beautiful, undeniably beautiful.

Her hair cascaded down her back as her eyes sparkled with a smile with unexplained joy as she looked at me, she was like a siren. Calling me in with her smile.

Something about her had me rooted to the spot, unable to move despite my will to continue home and rest for the night. It wasn’t like I had the urge to investigate this mysterious beauty further I just genuinely could move no further, like my legs were frozen solid.

A strange feeling began crawling through me, a feeling of unease. The hair on the back of my neck prickled and my blood ran cold as I saw her move, an unexplained feeling.
This woman had never done anything to me in the past in fact I had never met her before, so why did a single movement from her make me shudder?

I glanced around in hope of finding something else that would peak my interest, anything that could take my mind off the mystery woman and perhaps let me move again. Sadly there was nothing apart from buildings that were hidden behind rows of trees.

When I looked back towards the wall where the woman was leaning I was surprised to find that she was gone but that I still couldn’t move and the feeling of dread was still rushing over me. My hands were shaking and my stomach was full of butterflies.

A movement across the floor caught my attention, making me jump in shock. Considering its size I didn’t know how I had managed to over look the figure crawling across the floor, part of me wished I hadn’t noticed it just now.

My heart instantly faltered with a few beats and the lump got bigger causing my breath to catch in my chest, my shivering turned into full blown shakes as I surveyed the figure on the floor.

It was the woman, she was skeletally thin and her skin was deathly grey, her lips had turned blue whilst her once blonde hair had become more of a grey colour, matted with dirt and blood. There was no denying that she looked a lot healthier and…alive…when she was leaning against the wall a few feet away.

My eyes slowly scanned down her body which was led out on the concrete, nausea hit me in a second and I felt the colour drain from my face as I saw the trail of blood where her legs should be.

How was this woman still moving?

Her dead eyes looked up at me as she slowly reached out to me, her cold lips parting slowly and strange strangled noises left her throat.

My own throat went dry as I stared into her eyes and my body continued to betray my mind which was still crying out
for me to move, run away and not to look back.

It started screaming for me to move as I watched her reach down to where her legs should have been and pulled out a scythe that was covered in dried blood, where that had come from I couldn’t tell and it was the last thing I was capable of thinking about right now.

With the fear of death looming upon me my mind went blank; no life flashed before my eyes, no last wishes for friends and family….just fear.

She was going to make me like her, take my legs and let me bleed to death where I stood and it all started with a simple look her way.

Hell Reviews: Knock Knock - May contain minor spoilers...like it's awful.

Synopsis: Keanu Reeves stars in this home invasion thriller directed by Eli Roth. Left at home alone while his wife and children are away for the weekend, Evan Webber (Reeves) receives a late night visit from two attractive rain-soaked young women asking to use his phone. But after letting the girls inside and allowing them to use his shower and dry off their clothes, the night takes a turn as the two girls seduce Evan to thank him for his hospitality. Reluctant at first, Evan eventually gives in to temptation but not without suffering the consequences...

What happened Keanu?

Was this a quick money maker?

You actually had talent years ago and now this shoddy film has made me wonder if maybe I’m having nostalgia over an actor I haven’t seen in enough movies to have nostalgia over.
But Knock Knock was just so bad.

The premise of the film had so much promise, so how the hell did it fall this far?
The story of a father and husband being seduced into a threesome and then tormented for his mistake sounds like it could be a great idea, if it had been written better.

It goes without saying that this particular films seems to have gained a wonderful title of one of the worst films to come out that year and it’s not hard to see why.
Unfortunately it’s another of Eli Roth’s films that I will mentally slap myself for watching, and I know it’s bad when I can remember who the director is as I don’t pay attention to such things usually, but he’s proven in the past to be a disappointment.
I’m looking at you Hostel…and Cabin Fever….

To start off with Keanu’s character, Evan Webber, made such a drastic shift in a matter of minutes that it made no sense.
He goes from loving and devoted husband and father, hard working architect type to a cheater and a complete imbecile in mere seconds.
Now I know some people would defend it with; “But it’s two hot girls being easy and asking for it, who wouldn’t go for it? Heheh.”
Let me tell you, most men who give a damn about their family like he is originally shown to be, as weird as it may sound to say it, a man like my dad wouldn’t fall into such a pitiful trap because he has more respect for my mum than he would for two random women who think they’re clearly all that and can simply get away with it just because.
But we got to get the plot rolling somehow!

It’s one of the things I dislike about such things, rather than give us good story telling they’d rather get into showing the sexy women and torture so screw logical characters and motivation, and sometimes this may be forgivable but when the story you’re given leads to nothing and you’re supposed to live with “It happened just because,” then it makes Hell a very unhappy girl.
This isn’t to say that I need things painted out for me, but sometimes it’s nice to have a little motivation to go with your torture.
It wouldn’t have even taken much, a small change to make him in an unhappy marriage whilst not creating a masterpiece would offer some form of reasoning to why he’d go for it and I’m not buying that moment of weakness crap either.
Sometimes ‘just because’ isn’t enough, at least in The Strangers they said it was just because they were home, but Knock Knock feels like it’s trying to deliver a message and falls on its face halfway to your post box after tripping out of its delivery van.

The two girls were the worst antagonists ever, everything they did made my eyes roll.
From their more than obvious innocent act to the ‘we’re insane and can kill you’ act.
Who thought these characters up?
Never once did I get the impression that these girls are veteran cheater killers like they seem to imply that they are.
I also don’t understand the logic of going to relentless seduction attempts to make someone cheat and then punishing them for it.
I’d rather have seen this based on a character who is shown to be a serial cheater and scumbag than on someone who hasn’t seemed to do anything to anyone until pushed to it.
It just doesn’t make sense to me, it’s like making someone eat cake and then laughing at them and calling them fat because you made them eat the cake.

I admit that I am guilty of enjoying a good home invasion movie, they don’t even have to make sense but the feats in this film are just impossible. From how destructive they’re being around the house to how quickly they can move around and get changed seemed inhumanly quick, unless there’s meant to be a time lapse that isn’t even implied.
I can really enjoy characters who are a bit screwed in the head, take Mileena from Mortal Kombat and Tira from Soulcalibur, they are two of my favourite characters in video games and they’re bat-shit crazy, so why in films do the nutty women always make me groan and roll my eyes or physically cringe at the way they’re acting?

Not to mention that people with the attitudes they showed annoy the hell out of me and I honestly can’t suspend my disbelief to rationalise some of the stuff they managed to accomplish.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not one to think that girls can’t accomplish anything involving a man, but there are also natural limits when you look at basic physics of two tiny, scrawny girls who look like the wind could blow them over and someone of Keanu’s build.
Why did Evan not just punch one of these girls in the throat and then take out the other one whilst her friend was down?
He slapped one of them and choked another so clearly harming them isn’t a moral issue, so why didn’t he fight back like his life was genuinely on the line…which it was!
They were open on so many occasions and yet somehow they managed to outwit and overpower him ludicrously easily multiple times.
I also dislike it in these kind of films where anyone who comes into the picture that could actually help always gets easily taken out, with the most minimum of effort at that.
Even worse is that we’re supposed to believe that they’ve done this multiple times and haven’t been caught?
That’s absolutely ridiculous.
Then again I’m one of these people where I get irrationally annoyed when we’re supposed to believe this character is able to outwit everyone and pulls the wool over everyone’s eyes when it’s clear as day it’d never work in real life. (I’m looking at you Amnesiac.)
Technically I have no place to be taking entertainment from the fictional world if I’m that finicky about things.

The creators clearly had no idea how basic things seemed to work either, like when you call the police. Here I was thinking that if you hung up on the emergency services that they’d attempt to call you back and then dispatch the police to investigate if you don’t pick up, especially after you just spoke the words; “I’d like to report a break in.”
But I’m not part of the police force nor a dispatcher, so what do I know?

Who are we supposed to be rooting for?

At first you want to try and sympathise with Keanu Reeve’s character, but he cheated and cheating is a massive ‘no’ in my books. Not to mention the fact that he wasn’t man enough to stand his ground and decline their awfully obvious seduction tactics, how are we supposed to root for someone who just went for it?
That and he’s a completely unrelatable character, and that’s mainly because he’s so wooden and dull that there’s no personality there.

The girls aren’t the type I’d root for either, crazy for crazies sake doesn’t get me excited and I have, quite often, in the past found myself slightly disappointed when the antagonists I can actually wave a flag for get their comeuppance.

But that takes good writing and dialogue, something this film needs drastically.

The acting was simply horrific, but it goes along with the execution of the story really, completely crap and not worth your time, and I have seen some terrible acting in my life (I mean let’s face it, I’m a Supernatural fan and some of the acting on there can be questionable at best.)
The dog, Monkey, however was pretty cool, can’t fault that stellar acting.

The constant 'sexy' acting got tiring really fast, but I'm not part of the audience who these two moderately attractive girls are supposed to be appealing to.
Their act got tired quickly, especially the blonde Bel's constant 'daddy' talk during one scene, it wasn't sexy, it wasn't cute, it was just annoying and went on for too long.

If executed in a half decent way this film could have done for tormenting cheaters what Hard Candy did for tormenting suspected paedophiles, too bad it just seemed to be an excuse for the director to show off his ‘hot wife’.

Take a back seat Resident Evil, there’s a new wife flaunter in town.

Dismembear of the Week - Week Four

This weeks Dismembear was a special request, after I'd sold my first one in the shop it seemed that word had spread a little and a lady came in asking for one for her friend's birthday.

Through the Eyes of an Innocent by Hell.R.

My heart beats erratically as I pull the covers up higher until they touch my chin; my eyes were wide open as I stared towards my ceiling. Granted I couldn’t see anything through the darkness but I didn’t care, I needed to stay awake.

There’s something in the corner of my room and the second I close my eyes it’ll get closer and spring on me I just know it, I’m not stupid I know what happens in stories. The minute someone’s back is turned the thing attacks, the only advantage I had at this stage of the game was that it couldn’t attack when my back was turned because I was led down.

Yeah…I’m winning this round.

I could deal with no sleep for one night, its 2am now meaning there’s only about three more hours before the sun will start to rise and the thing in the corner will disappear. Sleep is over rated anyway.

A content smile crosses my lips before a jolt of realisation shot through me, the thing in the corner doesn’t attack unless my eyes are closed…but what about the thing at the end of my bed?

My eyes slowly lowered towards the end of my bed where a large shadow loomed over me, perfectly still but terrifyingly threatening. My blood ran cold and I found myself frozen in fear, I’ll be ok as long as I don’t move.

No sleep and no moving that’s easy.

But wait! What if I needed to use the bathroom?!

The thing under my bed was sure to reach out and grab me the minute I set my feet on the carpeted floor, it would drag me under and I’d become a slave to the bed goblins and ghouls. Dragged into their world to be tortured and then sold off as a slave, forced to work until my skin melts off.

A soft whimper escaped me as I shivered at the thought of Goblin Hell.

Wait…the thing at the end of the bed…did it just move? Did that one little shiver catch its attention?

Or did the thing in the closet tip it off?

The thing in the closet is the worse of them all, parents tell their children bogeymen live in the closet but I know better. The thing in the closet is no bogeyman but something far worse, more ferocious and blood thirsty.

I’ve seen it move around in there, knocking my things over whilst pacing back and forth. It’s waiting for me to go and investigate the noise before throwing the doors open and pulling me into the unknown.

There’s no protection from these things, even in the day they hide in the shadows but because they can’t go into sunlight they are stuck there until nightfall.

My mum tells me there’s nothing to be scared of but what does she know? Has she seen the things I have?

I know things are out there to get me, the darkness can hide many things and they all want to get me.

My eyes start to feel heavy and I couldn’t stop them from slowly sliding shut, the thing in the corner was sure to get me now but I couldn’t help myself, I was so tired.

Oh well maybe I’ll have more luck tomorrow night

Hell Reviews: Scream Street the TV series.

I know, I know…”Hell, this is meant to be book Wednesday, this isn’t a book!”

I’m sorry, I’m cheating a little today.

Now those of you who were here the other week, probably being no-one but you know, would remember that I did a review on a children’s book series called Scream Street and in that review I mentioned a show being made from it.

So I am going to review the show based on the book.

It was around mid-February that I found out that a long awaited cartoon had been made from it, first airing in October of 2015 apparently.
I’d missed it completely, but the magical thing called internet certainly helped me discover what I’d missed….kind of.
I’ve only seen a few episodes as the entire catalogue seems kind of difficult to find online all in one place, even on their own website, but you can play a game to make yourself a scary monster!
From the ones I found I watched about two episodes and was highly disappointed to the point where I couldn’t actually watch anymore.

The books have this amazing story about three friends finding relics to get the parents of one of their group home to live normal lives by the standards of humans, and people have been crying for a TV series to be made from this premise and characters.

So why did they make a show that only seemed to use the characters and not the fascinating story?

The creators had this whole, magical story to work with and instead they went for fifteen minute stories that don’t relate in anyway to anything and I’m failing to understand why. One of the ones I watched was about a renegade hoover.

Some of the characters have had some strange design alterations and one has been changed completely!
Bella Negative seems to have ditched her original vampire looking designs from the book illustrations to horrible, tacky clothes that you see people on Jeremy Kyle usually wearing.
Luella went from being a beautiful witch with a daughter called Poppy to a teenage trainee witch with a thing for Resus.
Why?
Not a clue.
Despite only being in one book she was her own character who fit in well with the original story and now they’ve shifted her to a teenage fangirl.

The animation also jars me, I think it’s kind of ugly to be honest. There’s not much I can say about it aside from I really don’t like it, but this would probably be because I kind of liked the scruffy looking illustrations from the book and the designs from the show just don’t sit well with me.

(My favourite book cover to date)
(Resus' design on the show.)

However I know I am not the demographic for this show and it’s not made to entertain me, I just can’t help but feel let down by what CBBC produced from a story that would have translated so well on the screen if it had been followed.

Maybe this was their intent?

To tell a different story away from what you’ve already read, little bits and pieces of 'normal' life in between their adventures, but there are children out there who don’t read and aren’t encouraged to who will miss out on the original plot that I think would really entertain them.

The show was put up for an award however, so it seems that I don’t know anything and should keep hushed as a casual TV viewer.

The original author Tommy Donbavand, who is an awesome guy from what I’ve seen and thumbs up to him for keeping the series going with e-books, seems happy with the end result and I suppose that is ultimately what matters.

Not everything will be to everyone’s taste, and this is one thing where I will simply stick to the books.

Horrorcon 2016!

What a way to wake up!

So, for those folks who may not know, here in the UK we have a large supermarket called Sainsbury's who have their own points system including a plastic card. This system is called Nectar, and you can link it all with all kinds of places from cinema tickets to Ebay purchases.
Anyway, recently they've been holding this promotion called #makesmeMe, where you send in a short paragraph and/or photo of what makes you unique and they eventually picked out people to give things to.
Apparently I was one of those people!
My horror story writing and Dismembears were apparently enough to win me something.
They contacted me mid last week to inform me that I would be receiving a 'surprise'.
I was expecting it to be a little gift card or something, a small but welcome sum all the same, my parents joked that it'd be a certificate of participation.
I woke up this morning, a beautiful Wednesday morning...or afternoonish....and found out it had arrived, my surprise!
Honestly when I saw the large A4 envelope and I had a laugh thinking maybe my parents were right, but I eagerly tore it open and pulled out the sheet of paper...to read that they are sending me tickets to the 2016 Horror con!
I've never been before, it's bit of a distance away honestly, but it's amazing!
I'm so excited!!!

Oh yeah...book review will be up later once I've calmed down, but I may do something a little different with it today!

An honourable mention goes out to a Dismembear:

Thanks for helping with my uniqueness guys!

Never Apart by Hell.R.

Her skin is beautiful.

A perfect milky white, the complete contrast to my previous girlfriend, her skin had been a wonderful dark colour.

I don’t care about the colour of their skin, it’s always been about the condition of that skin. Always soft, no unsightly blemishes such as acne or scars.

They could only be perfect.

I like distinguishing features, the odd mole, perhaps cute freckles as they add personality.

My girlfriend has the cutest little line of moles down the right side of her stomach.

Her sparkling eyes follow my hand down her body as I trace it down her perfect skin, tears rolling down her cheeks whilst I smile in love and admiration.

“You will be the best one of them all,” I whisper.

Those eyes flashed with an all too familiar look that I am still yet to understand, all of my previous girlfriends had the same look as the blade first sunk into their skin. An angelic scream echoes around the room and makes my heart skip a few beats, I love that sound.

I sink the silver blade in at an angle in jagged movements to separate the skin from anything else, blood poured over my hand that was resting on her side. With each movement she’d let out a cry and a whimper and a smile just broke my face in half.

Once an edge was established I began to peel the skin back to reveal the red underneath and continue to dissect a large portion until it had finally fallen away completely.

One beautiful piece of milk coloured skin, stained red.

I set the knife by her hip and get up, stepping away from the table she was strapped to. Pulling the side of my shirt up, I place the piece of skin across my side, holding it there until I reach the mirror across the room.

The contrast of the skin sample against my own was beautiful, the white contrasted against my own scarred, tanned skin wonderfully.

“Simply magnificent.”

The skin makes an almost delightfully sickening noise as it slaps against the counter of the wooden table beside the mirror, right next to a needle and thread.

I move the mirror around so that I could sit at the table and have a perfect view of myself.

After removing my shirt I hold the skin against my own once again, admiring the sight with distraction before snapping out of it and grabbing onto an already prepared needle.

The first stitch always hurts the most, having the end of the needle push through the flesh stung every time, but after that it becomes an almost addictive feeling. The need to feel the piece of thread moving between your skin and tightening the new addition was euphoric.

Watching as the loose and flapping piece of slowly dying flesh attaches to yours with each new stitch was addictive.

It only takes about five minutes until it’s over and the feeling of bliss subsides, my body tingles all over as I take a wet wipe from a packet on top of the table and begin wiping the excess blood from my newly grafted skin.

With my new, milky skin all cleaned up I make my way back to the table. Leaning over this beautiful woman I smile so lovingly that my cheeks hurt, she stares back at me as her chest heaves up and down with large pants.

“Well I think that went very well, shall we continue?”

Hell Reviews: Ginger Snaps

Synopsis: Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins) are two teenage sisters fed up with the routine of high school, dating and parents. They long for something which would bring a little excitement into their lives, but when Ginger is attacked by a werewolf it's maybe a little too much, too soon. Over the following months, Ginger undergoes some surprising physical and psychological transformations. Brigitte does her best to fight against the changes and win her sister back, but with Ginger having now infected her boyfriend Jason (Jesse Moss), it seems that she might be fighting a losing battle.

I first watching Ginger Snaps years ago, back when I lived in our old house...which is scary to think that was over ten years ago now! It was my first official horror film after being frightened by a bit of Hellraiser that I saw a few years earlier.
It was late one night and I was lounging around with my mum when she spotted it and said we could watch it together, I believe this may have been on the Syfy channel when it was still called Sci-Fi, and it was a UK premiere.
This would have been around the time I was first starting to get into horror as a genre, I loved dragons and vampires, long before I took a liking to werewolves, but it seemed interesting and I figured 'screw it, a nice easy film to watch with my mum'.
In the end, I loved it.

I've rewatched it quite a few times since then, and although it doesn't seem to hold up as well as I remember it, I still think it's a great film.
The way they mix lycanthropy with puberty was pretty clever and Ginger's transformation was a great, relatively slow progress when compared to other werewolf films. I liked the slow progress of the change rather than a super rapid transformation, it was nice to see something more based on the emotional relationship between the sister's than having it pushed to one side to make room for action.
As a girl who was just entering the old puberty cycle, it seemed like an interesting take on the subject compared to the old 'What's happening to me' books, which whilst interesting really lack the fun factor. They really need some horror versions of those books for the creepy dudes and dudettes out there.
It's a film where you can definitely see why it's been classed as a revolutionary film for its genre, whether you enjoyed it personally or not.

Both the main actresses did a good job and this was my first introduction to Katharine Isabelle, who I officially class as my favourite actress. Emily Perkins did an amazing job in her role, but it was Katharine that was perhaps my first 'girl crush', I think she's absolutely gorgeous and I loved the design of her partially turned phase which is represented on a film poster that was sadly didn't get over here in the UK.

I also love how both these girls go on to have roles in Supernatural, with Emily playing a role that is so different from what I'm used to seeing her in. (A role that some have actually found insulting, to an understandable degree.)

This isn't to say that the film didn't have any faults, as all films do, but I never really found any that took me out of what I was watching and made me lose track of anything that was going on whilst I contemplated why they'd make such a decision or miss such an easily edited detail.
I mean sure, the girl who liked to tease Ginger and Brigitte seemed a little bit unneeded and unbelievable, but she has hardly any screen time and there is one moment where the music and way it's shot make that particular scene feel like it's part of a comedy film that accidentally got sliced in that's kind of distracting, but they're only two very short parts of a small list of gripes.

Ginger Snaps is one of those films that left an impression on me, so much so that I could happily recommend it to people for an easy watch, including my own brother.
After my first viewing I went out to buy the DVD and found out there were two more, luckily I found all three in a boxset. Not so luckily, I found the other two fairly disappointing, with the third being completely forgettable.

Would I recommend it?
Sure! I found it fun to watch, I still do and think it's a good, simple watch to get your fill of sisters angsting, period scares and werewolves.
